San Diego isn’t typically the first place that comes to mind when people think of California wine country. However, thanks to the area’s local vintners, San Diego wineries are quickly putting the region on the map.

If you’re looking for a scenic spot to sip some San Diego wine, you’ll find an array of vineyards ranging from sprawling countryside estates to intimate backyard experiences that easily rival their northern counterparts.

Orfila Vineyards and Winery

This 70-acre estate in Escondido is owned by Alejandro Orfila, former Argentinian Ambassador to the United States. Guests are encouraged to bring their own food to enjoy a picnic along with live music. Free tours are offered daily at the Escondido tasting room, or venture out to the tasting room in Oceanside, its newest location, complete with charcuterie and artisanal cheese boards.

Milagro Farm Vineyards and Winery

This beautiful winery located in Ramona not only boasts exquisite estate-grown wines, but is also an orchard and organic food farm. Enjoy the vineyard’s tasting room along with live music and delicious fare. Take a bottle out to the grounds to play bocce ball, horseback ride, or simply stroll through scenic grounds. Milagro is also pet-friendly so you can play with pups as you sip a glass.

Cordiano Winery

If you like to pair your wine with breathtaking views and authentic Italian pizza (yes to both, please) then this is the winery you. This small, family-owned and operated vineyard is located on the property of Gerardo and Rosamaria Cordiano, who bring their old-country wine and culinary expertise from Italy to the foothills San Diego. Enjoy out on the massive outdoor patio featuring sweeping views of the valley.

Whichever winery you visit, get ready to raise a glass to these local gems!
